Here you can find brief information about our initiative to build an Islamic Cultural Center in Turku, the former capital of Finland in southwest of Finland. Find us on Facebook.
Our vision: an international symbol of constructive interfaith and intercultural dialogue and cooperation
While the Cultural Center would provide the required services for the local muslim community and would contain a mosque, our big vision is that the Center would become known as an international symbol of a modern spiritual center educating for tolerance, peace and constructive cooperation and dialogue between all cultures and all faiths.
Potential things that could be happening at the Center:
- Cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue
- Dialogue through art and popular culture
- Courses (e.g. arabic language)
- Seminars
- Islamic history
- Courses on islam
- Cheerful socialization among friends in the Center's restaurant
Our vision for the building: a modern construction uniquely fitting into the Finnish cultural landscape
As the initiative is only in its early stages, we do not have any drawings to show on how the building would look like. Everything depends whether we get buy-in from the City of Turku for the initiative as well as the necessary funding.
Instead, we can share our vision for the building, which would be of a building that would uniquely fit to the Finnish cultural landscape in a modern and harmonous way.
Potential spaces / rooms include:
- Meeting rooms
- Exhibition spaces
- Mosque
- Library
- Gymnasium
- Social spaces
- Restaurant / cafe
Example 1: Penzberg Mosque, Germany
As an example, we'd like to draw your attention to Penzberg's mosque in Germany which has won awards for its distinctive design. Pay attention to the big glass wall symbolizing the mosque's openness. Note also how the minaret acts as a "silent" call to prayer as its built out of the arabic letters that make up the call to prayer.

Example 2: St. Henrik's ecumenical art chapel in Hirvensalo in Turku, Finland
Another example the St. Henrik's ecumenical art chapel in Hirvensalo in Turku, Finland. This magnificent church is a beautiful example of how a spiritual building can be both modern and traditional at the same time.
